In Season 2, the Mercy Street production took the cast and crew through Virginia, touring various plantations around the state and Historic Olde Towne Petersburg. Follow along with our exclusive photo galleries, which provide a glimpse into the filming of the show.  

Berkeley Plantation 

One of the earliest English settlements in America (1638), Berkeley today comprises about 1,000 acres of cultivated, sustainable no-till farmland; protected wetlands, mature forest and 10 acres of formal gardens; and manicured grounds surrounding the original Georgian mansion built in 1726. Located on high ground overlooking the James River, halfway between Richmond and Williamsburg, it is the ancestral home of two United States presidents, William Henry Harrison and his son, Benjamin Harrison, and was the site of several significant campaigns in the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

The Army bugle call, "Taps" was composed by a Union soldier while encamped at Berkeley in 1862. The first official Thanksgiving in English America took place at Berkeley in the fall of 1619. It is now a museum property, open to the public.

Tuckahoe Plantation 

Boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson, Tuckahoe Plantation is a National Historic Landmark and is protected in perpetuity by a preservation easement donated by the owners. It is considered by architectural historians to be among the finest early 18th century plantation homes in America. Tuckahoe PlantationTomas Sturgis Trigo Built between 1730 and 1740, this unique Randolph family plantation home and its outbuildings have persisted through a rich American history.

Battersea Plantation 

Battersea Plantation is located within Petersburg city limits and yet it offers a rural, country setting with lush fields, forest and a historic plantation home built in 1760. Battersea was built by Petersburg's founding father, John Bannister, one of the signers of the Articles of Confederation in the Revolutionary War. A key feature of the 18th century architecture is a beautiful Chinese staircase in the Chippendale style in the central block of the house.

The Battersea  Foundation is a non-profit organization of dedicated citizens who are currently working hard to restore this historic home to its original 18th century appearance.

Historic Olde Towne Petersburg 

The Old Towne Historic District was originally centered around what was called “River," “Main," and “Old” Street throughout its life and was adjacent to bustling waterfront facilities along the Appomattox River. It contains the largest number of 18th century buildings of any neighborhood in the city.

On the eastern edge of the district is the commercial development constructed largely following a disastrous fire of 1815. It features many pre-Civil War three-story brick row buildings including the Appomattox Iron Works complex and other unique buildings such as the South Side Depot and warehouse. Notable cobblestone streets include Cockade Alley, Rock Street and River Street. Today, this is the heart of Petersburg’s downtown commercial district.

Old StreetTomas Sturgis Trigo The broad range of building types in this district – from the modest 18th century houses of Grove Avenue, to the mansions of High Street and the federal townhouses and stores of downtown – makes this area one of the most varied and exciting historic neighborhoods in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Many of Petersburg’s famed craftsmen, including wheelwrights, cabinet makers, chair makers and house painters, built their homes and businesses in this district. Many of these original, early buildings have survived largely intact, offering Mercy Street a diverse back lot of  location filming opportunities that stand in, quite convincingly, for Alexandria, Washington City (as it was called at that time) and Boston.

Centre Hill Mansion

Owned and operated as a historic museum by the City Of Petersburg. Used extensively as the upscale private home of the Green Family. Also used the basement tunnel as Interior Capitol Prison in Mercy Street Season 2.
